NEW DATE! - The August EET training will focus on radio communications during emergency evacuation events. The discussion will be centered on radio etiquette, message and response structure, and basic operation of the radios themselves. We will focus on some of the inefficiencies that were identified in our most recent functional exercise and observations of communications at the Aspen Acres fire.

This session will be held via Zoom. Credentials will be emailed to all current volunteers a few days before the event. All EET volunteers are encouraged to attend.

Join us and our guest speaker Fred Martin from the Broomfield Historical Society for a presentation entitled “Beer and Horses: An Unexpected Broomfield Origin Story of the Zang Family.” The Zang Family is deeply rooted in Colorado’s history, including the creation of what is now the City of Broomfield. The family’s brewing operations are legendary among Colorado’s beer drinkers, and their involvement with horses, particularly Percherons, is widely known among the local equestrian community. The event will be held at New Terrain Brewing, where ride-ups are welcome and hitching rails are provided. The second of our two EET training sessions in June will be a tour of the Jefferson County Emergency Operations Center, led by Kate Cannon, Jeffco’s Emergency Management Coordinator. We encourage all EET volunteers to join us for a walkthrough of the newly rebuilt facility and learn what takes place behind the scenes during widespread emergencies and evacuations in the county.

The first of our two EET training sessions in June will be a hands-on horse trailer loading class, focused on loading in emergency situations. This training is co-sponsored by the JCSO Animal Control Unit and will take place at The Colorado Horse Rescue site in Longmont. The number of participants will be limited. The first Saturday in June is designated as National Trails Day! National Trails Day is a nationwide celebration to explore public lands, advocate for trail access, and give back through volunteer maintenance. Our June meeting will be a picnic at the Horse Protection League. Join us for a picnic dinner (Burgers and hot dogs provided - Feel free to bring a dessert or side to share), a tour of the facility, a chance to pick up some great tack deals at The Grey Tail, and a talk on the history of Churches Ranch as presented by Barb Warden. May’s speaker will be Kym Morrissey, President of Colorado Horse Development Authority.

The Colorado Horse Development Authority (CHDA) is a promotional and marketing arm of the horse industry. Established in 1998 through legislation that charged the CHDA to strengthen the equine industry, CHDA is funded through the assessment of a fee on brand inspections. CHDA has educated horse owners and the general public on equine health, land management, land use regulations, classification of horses, through videos, pamphlets, twelve town meetings across the state, and Ag in the Classroom readers, reaching 66,000 youth in classrooms. CHDA has promoted the horse to our youth by sponsoring the 2,400 4-H youth entries at Colorado State Fair, the FFA National Judging team, and sending Colorado 4-H Horse Bowl team to the Quarter Horse Congress. In addition, CHDA sponsored the Four Mile Historic Park’s Draft Horse Day reaching thousands of new potential horse owners.

Link to All Jeffco 4-H 2026 Open Horse Shows

This is an annual emergency simulation event coordinated by the Jeffco Animal Control Unit to prepare JCART members for various scenarios that may be encountered during an emergency evacuation. All EET managers, volunteers, and prospective volunteers are highly encouraged to attend. The event includes lunch and a post-mortem operational review with the ACU and haulers. Emails with details and an RSVP request will be sent to all current EET volunteers prior to the event. Please email EET@jeffcohorse.com if you not a current volunteer but are interested in joining.

Hikers, bikers, runners, horses, pack burros, leashed friendly dogs, and kids in strollers are all welcome to participate. The Equestrian Skills Course is a fantastic free resource that allows riders and their horses to practice trail skills so that they can enjoy our beautiful Colorado outdoors. Each obstacle has an easy, moderate, and hard route for completion so that riders and horses can enjoy an obstacle suitable for their abilities. This is a fundraiser for the volunteers that build and maintain these obstacles, the Friends of the Equestrian Skills Course. April’s EET training topic is Wildfire Control and Mitigation Plans. Our presenter will be Jill Welle, Community Engagement Program Supervisor, Wildland Fire Program, Emergency Services Section of the Jeffco Sheriff’s Office. Ms. Welle’s presentation will provide background information for our organization in our role as ambassadors for preparedness for wildfires and evacuations. All current and prospective EET volunteers are encouraged to attend.

The Horse Protection League Spring Tack Sale will be on Saturday, April 18 from 9am - 4pm at The Grey Tail, located in the ranch house at HPL. We'll have Western, English, and Dressage saddles, saddle pads, bridles, reins, and bareback pads. Clothing and footwear will also be on sale as well as barn and grooming supplies. Come on in and stock up and support our herd!

This session will take place in Deer Trail, CO, so plan ahead for travel time or plan to carpool with other volunteers. All current and prospective EET volunteers are encouraged to attend.

Jefferson County is pleased to announce that the Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, April 8, 2026 to discuss the Adoption Draft of the Jefferson County Comprehensive Plan (CP). This is a hybrid hearing, so attendance can be either in person or virtual. 

The Adoption Draft, Staff Report, and Comment Response documents can be found in the Case File. Background information about the CP process can be found on the Together Jeffco website. 

Any comments on the draft should be addressed to the Planning Commission via email, since Staff will not be making any additional changes prior to the hearing. Comments will be considered during the hearing.

NOTE: The training originally scheduled for 3/16 has been postponed in favor of this unique hands-on training session offered by Broken Shovels Farm Sanctuary.

Broken Shovels is a farm animal rescue, and they have a variety of farm animals that we will have a chance to work with.  During the Quarry Fire we had quite a variety of animals, and the Animal Control people think this will be characteristic of future evacuations.  This should be a good opportunity to get experience with different species of animals that we are likely to manage in future evacuations. EET members should have a current waiver on file or be willing to sign one on the day of the event in order to participate in the training.

This month’s meeting will feature guest speakers Kristina Duff, Senior Planner and Amara Meier, Project Manager both with Jeffco Open Space. Kristina and Amara will discuss Open Space planning activities, particularly North Table Mountain and Van Bibber Park Trail Extension, which will connect riders from Silver Quarter Acres nearly all the way to Shiloh Farms.

February’s EET training session will be held remotely via Zoom. Much of our training focuses on the initial intake phase of an evacuation. This session will focus on the post-intake phases, including ongoing care, and barn, office, and traffic responsibilities once the initial rush is over. The training will be held by Zoom and all current and prospective EET volunteers are encouraged to attend. Current volunteers will receive Zoom credentials via email Others may request credentials by contacting our Volunteer Coordinator at EET@jeffcohorse.com.

Are track systems just a trend—or a real welfare tool?
Join Erika Franson as she explores how housing design, movement, and daily routines affect horse behavior and stress.  

Erika Franson is a PhD candidate in Animal Science at Colorado State University, studying equine behavior and welfare under Dr. Temple Grandin.  Her dissertation research focuses on evaluating equine track systems as a management alternative, and their effects on stress, movement, and social behavior.  Erika owns and operates Blue Mountain Equestrian, LLC, home of Meet the Charge Horsemanship.  She specializes in natural horse boarding, starting young horses, advancing problem-solving, and developing solid partnerships between horse and rider.  Erika is passionate about practical, evidence-based horse management.  She combines her academic background with more than 15 years of hands-on experience to help horse owners make informed decisions that support both horse welfare and human goals.
