Subject: Thursday meeting in Boulder
The members of the Open Space Board were feeling a bit embattled evidently, as the chairman cautioned against nasty language, personal verbal attacks and projectiles. There was a city copy in full body armor stationed where the Board was sitting. I guess in Boulder they really know how to hold a Public Meeting.
In the actual event about 170 people showed up and things never got close to getting out of hand, although there were tears at one point when a woman broke down talking about how important a certain trail was to her dog.
About 50 people spoke. About 12 spoke in favor of horses. None spoke against horses. About 20 spoke in favor of mountain bikes (not currently allowed at all). Three of the non-horse people made favorable mention of horses briefly. I guess they thought we had established ourselves at a formidable force and they were seeking allies?
Now the Board has to meld the public comments with Staff recommendations to come up with a package they can recommend to the City Council. This will involve a series of public meetings, only some of which will take public comments. The public comment meetings will be Jan. 6, Jan. 19, Feb. 9 and Feb. 23. I believe we should rely on the Boulder people to bird-dog these meetings and let us know if and when they might need our additional weight at meetings.
